The Five Significance Thresholds
The criteria behind the Black Heritage Map. A site clears the Primary Gate only if Black agency is central to its story. Beyond that gate, every site must meet at least one of these five thresholds.
- 1. Black-Founded or Black-Established. Founded by Black people for self-governance, education, worship, or economic independence.
- 2. Black Creative Production. Produced or inspired literature, music, film, visual art, oral history, or folklore.
- 3. Black Resistance or Civic Action. A documented site of resistance to slavery, segregation, environmental racism, or political exclusion.
- 4. Black Community Continuity. A multigenerational Black community presence sustained across more than fifty years.
- 5. Black Ancestral Record. Holds records, archives, or material culture that enable Black heritage recovery.
